English Language Tests for Tertiary Students

All institutions require a specific level of understanding of the English Language to enable students to succeed in their studies. Therefore all students whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language meets the requirements for admissions.

Students who do not meet the required English level may need to arrive in Australia at an earlier period prior to their formal course to undertake some intensive English language courses, i.e. English for Academic Purposes. The length of these courses varies upon students' current English standards. It is necessary that their English standard reach the required level before they can be accepted into their formal courses.

The English requirements are most commonly satisfied in one of the following tests.

English language Tests recognized by Australian institutions:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System):

The test is administered two or three times a month. The test dates are normally held on Saturdays. The IELTS result will be available 3 weeks after the test. Test includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. AEC provides free IELTS information and lodges applications for our AEC students free of charge. Please contact us on 2598 6166 for assistance. For further details, please visit www.ielts.org

  • TOEFL – (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

Test is administered via computer and is given year-round at the TOEFL  computer-based test centers. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.  For details, please visit: www.toefl.org

  • In order to speed up the application process, some institutions also provide their own internal English test for students free of charge. These internal tests can be taken at AEC and usually take students approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete depending on the individual institution. Please contact us on 2598 6166 for assistance.
